Abstract:

Brock Bingaman commends the Philokalia to the Vineyard as a source of spiritual wisdom that can fortify and deepen our engagement with the triune God and thereby with the world. He identifies four themes in these spiritual writings that he sees as providing helpful interaction with Vineyard spirituality:

  • the apophatic approach to reflection on God’s transcendent mystery
  • the pursuit of mystical union with God
  • the importance of disciplined practices to enhance our spiritual engagement with God
  • the ecclesiological connection of the mystical and missional aspects of our faith

This response introduces some points of clarification and some criticism, and asks some questions about ways forward.

There wasn't time during the session to voice or address all the main points of the response, so I hope that Brock will interact further with my comments and questions, and those of others, here on the forum. :)

The full response is attached to this post.
