Abstract:

Pentecostals and other charismatic Christians have been accused in popular and scholarly literature of being either un-sacramental or anti-sacramental in their expression of worship. However, viewing enactments of the gifts of the Spirit in Pentecostal worship through the lens of Wesley’s own criteria for “means of grace” may provide Pentecostals with a shared vocabulary from which to dialogue more successfully with other Christian traditions. This paper explores which Pentecostal practices might qualify as "ordinary means of grace," and ends with horizons for further consideration of these practices as fulfilling the role of sacraments to the congregations in which they are demonstrated.
