Abstract:

Reflecting on Augustine’s cry; “Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.”

An exploration of worship as  ‘coming home’.

A narrative commentary on Romans, looking at Paul’s Gospel, unity in the Church and the multi faceted idea of God’s righteousness as being an intrinsic part of what it means to worship.

God is not just the object of our worship, but the agent as well. Romans 8 tells us that not only do we cry out to God through the Spirit in worship, but also both Christ and the Spirit intercede for us.

So at the heart of who we are as Christians is not our experience or our activity, but our relationship with the Father, through the Son, by the Holy Spirit. It is a dialogical relationship. One that starts from the Father, through the Son, by the Spirit, and responds from ourselves, by the Spirit, through the Son, to the Father.

However, coming ‘home’ and finding our rest in God’s Kingdom of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit is not just so that we can be cozy individuals, but so that we can be individuals who find our true identity in our corporate place as the new humanity, in unity appreciating God’s glory, buty also crying out for His justice and righteousness against the powers and pain in this world.
