A narrative hermeneutic inspired by Iraeneus’ idea of ‘recapitulation’, where Adam as ‘image’ and ‘likeness’ of God must reflect the true glory of the creator, taking up the challenge to fill the earth, rule over it and subdue it.
The narrative follows a ‘quest’ story plot, where ‘likeness’ becomes lost and must be restored. Sovereignty and Providence work graciously and patiently through the story of a humanity that needs to grow up, despite continual opposition from evil forces which lure it into choices that cause social alienation – from God and one another. Finally, reconciliation becomes possible through the miracles of incarnation and resurrection. Likeness, with image, is restored, but still there are enemies to overcome until that Day when the tempter is destroyed forever.
